CIPROTEKA® belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for virus infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Mechanism of action:
CIPROTEKA® is a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone class. It is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by inhibiting DNA gyrase, and a type II topoisomerase, topoisomerase IV, necessary to separate bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division.

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor’s approval.
Some products that may interact with this drug include: “blood thinners” (such as acenocoumarol, warfarin), strontium.
Many drugs besides CIPROTEKA® may affect the heart rhythm (QT prolongation), including amiodarone, dofetilide, quinidine, procainamide, sotalol, among others.
This medication can slow down the removal of other medications from your body, which may affect how they work. Examples of affected drugs include duloxetine, pirfenidone, tasimelteon, tizanidine, among others.
Avoid drinking large amounts of beverages containing caffeine (coffee, tea, colas), eating large amounts of chocolate, or taking over-the-counter products that contain caffeine. This drug may increase and/or prolong the effects of caffeine.
Although most antibiotics are unlikely to affect hormonal birth control such as pills, patch, or ring, a few antibiotics (such as rifampin, rifabutin) can decrease their effectiveness. This could result in pregnancy. If you use hormonal birth control, ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
Other CIPROTEKA® Interactions:
CIPROTEKA® can cause drowsiness and confusion. Don’t drive or participate in any dangerous activities until you know how CIPROTEKA® affects you.
CIPROTEKA® can make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure.
Don’t use a tanning bed, and avoid long exposure to sunlight while taking it. Protect your skin in the sun with clothing or sunscreen.
You can take CIPROTEKA® with or without food.
Don’t take CIPROTEKA® with only dairy products or with only calcium-fortified juice because calcium can interfere with absorption of CIPROTEKA®.
You can, however, take CIPROTEKA® with a meal that includes dairy or calcium-fortified juice.

Warnings:
– CIPROTEKA® may increase the risk for swelling and tearing of tendons, such as those that attach muscles to bones in the hands, shoulders, and ankles.
The likelihood of tendon damage is greater if you also take a steroid medication or if you’re older than 60. If you experience pain, swelling, or stiffness while taking CIPROTEKA®, let your doctor know.
– In some people, CIPROTEKA® may cause changes in brain activity. This affects people with a history of seizures.
Possible symptoms of these changes include dizziness, hallucinations, tremors, seizures, confusion, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
If you have any of these symptoms while on CIPROTEKA®, let your doctor know right away.
– CIPROTEKA® may cause a severe reaction called anaphylaxis if you are allergic to it. This allergic reaction, which can be life-threatening, may include hives, swelling of the throat, and difficulty breathing.
It’s important to know that once you start a course of CIPROTEKA®, you should finish the whole course.
Do not stop taking CIPROTEKA®, even if you feel better, until all of the medication is gone.
– If you don’t take an antibiotic long enough, your infection can come back stronger. And stopping CIPROTEKA® too soon can lead to bacteria becoming resistant to it.
You may not be able to take CIPROTEKA® if you have a condition called myasthenia gravis. CIPROTEKA® may increase muscle weakness caused by this condition.

Side effects:
The most common side effects of CIPROTEKA® are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and rash.
Less common side effects include:
– Headache
– Stomachache
– Heartburn
– Body aches
– Itching
– Skin sensitivity to sunlight
– Loss of appetite

Dosage Forms & Strengths:
Your dose of CIPROTEKA® will depend on the type of bacterial infection you have.
CIPROTEKA® comes in regular and extended-release tablets and as a liquid.
Take regular tablets or the liquid twice a day (morning and evening) at about the same time each day, and take extended-release tablets once a day.
Swallow all tablets whole. Don’t crush, split, or chew them.
Regular tablets come in 250, 500, and 750 milligrams (mg).
Some typical doses for common infections using regular tablets include:
Uncomplicated gonorrhea infection: 250 mg, single dose
Uncomplicated urinary tract infection: 250 mg every 12 hours for three days
Bacterial diarrhea: 500 mg every 12 hours for five to seven days
Acute sinusitis: 500 mg every 12 hours for 10 days
Severe pneumonia: 750 mg every 12 hours for seven to 14 days
Chronic bacterial prostatitis: 500 mg every 12 hours for 28 days
Moderate bone or joint infection: 500 mg every 12 hours for four to six weeks
